The Round Table

Life always comes full circle, giving us chances for continual “do-overs.”

A new 2020 calendar emerges with the cover mandala lifting itself up through the piles of mandalas made over the last two years. I had more mandalas to choose from for this calendar because I did not make a calendar for 2019.

The mandala-making process always ends up with a surprise title revealing itself. I finish the mandala and wait. I attempt to become neutral (not always successfully) and let words show up. The title for this calendar cover mandala surprised me and gave me hope.

“Reconvene the Knights of the Round Table”

From the book called Le Morte d’Arthur by the illusive Thomas Malory, first published around 1485, the Code of Chilvary honored by each knight:

  • To never do outrage nor murder (not to assault or murder anybody)
  • To by no means be cruel but to give mercy unto him who asks for mercy (Do not be mean. Grant mercy to those who ask, even in combat.)
  • To always do ladies, gentlewomen and widows succor (‘succor’ is an old word for help; this means that the knight must promise to help women if they need it.)
  • To never force ladies, gentlewomen or widows (never ‘harm’ women.)
  • Not to take up battles in wrongful quarrels for love or worldly goods (do not even join in fights over anything less than God or country)
  • Always to flee treason (do not commit treason, a crime against your country or king)
  • To fear God and maintain His Church

(Fearing God seems to be a long upheld false premise that I do not subscribe to at all. Human beings came up with the idea that God needed to be feared.)
